Introduction: Sierra Leone

Since 1991, civil war between the government and the Revolutionary United Front (RUF) has resulted in tens of thousands of deaths and the displacement of more than 2 million people (well over one-third of the population), many of whom are now refugees in neighbouring countries. After several setbacks, the end to the 11-year conflict in Sierra Leone may have now been reached. With the support of the UN peacekeeping force and contributions from the World Amani & NnamdiBank and international community, demobilisation and disarmament of the RUF and Civil Defence Forces (CDF) combatants has been completed. National elections were held in May 2002 and the government continues to slowly re-establish its authority. The all important development of the infrastructure has started to take place over the last 2 years and with the slow return of the local population from all parts of the world, investment, tourism, development, etc., is now on the increase.........

The past two years have seen remarkable transformations in the country that observers three years ago would not have thought possible. In the last two years, peaceful and credible elections for president, parliament and paramount chief were held, Government authority is now being re-established in all districts of the country, and the Disarmament, Demobilization and Reintegration (DDR) program came to its conclusion in December 2003.

This poverty has been exacerbated by the damage inflicted on the country’s infrastructure during the civil war, particularly in the North and East. The crumbling remnants of schools, roads, and hospitals give only a clue to what existed in pre-war Sierra Leone. In addition to this, lingering social, political and psychological scars have been left on the people of Sierra Leone that lived for years in a state of conflict, experiencing massive displacement, social upheaval and lost faith, in a corrupt and grossly mismanaged public service.

Despite the poverty and damage seen today in Sierra Leone, the country’s macro-economic performance has shown some signs for optimism. Real GDP growth continues to hover at an annual rate of more than 6%. Legal diamond exports increased from $41 million in 2002 to over $75 million in 2003. Sierra Leone was able to benefit from debt relief under the Heavily Indebted Poor Country Initiative (HIPC).

The one thing that the people of Sierra Leone have is the will to survive and build their country back up, they have a resilience & steely determination to succeed, something we all could take a lesson in............

Projects overview back

SMG along with Healthcare Benefits are working together in conjunction with Blue Shield Service Ltd, Sierra Leone, to produce two Dental clinics in existing hospitals in Freetown along with up to a 25 chair school/college.  Pulling on more than 35 years experience in this field we hope to advance the dental capability in Sierra Leone 10 fold over the next 5 years.

To assist this and other projects we will be forming a Telecommunication company in Sierra Leone through Red Telecommunications Ltd, UK, see "telecoms".  To better the telephone & ADSL facilities specifically for the hospitals, etc.  This will be done through a new satellite connection with its own independent power supply, allowing SIP, WiFi & CPS communications to be more consistent and reliable than currently available.

We are also working together, on a humanitarian hospital projects to refurbish a dilapidated 50-75 bed Hospital in Kenema and a 15 - 25 bed clinic in Kono.  These hospitals are vital in these area's as the population starts to return and things get back to normal, this is an essential part of the infrastructure that will help to guarantee the stability of the area.  We currently have 90% of the refurbished hospital equipment needed, in storage and owned by ourselves.  The remaining amount required is set aside and ready for shipment.

The two properties will be totally refurbished to a high standard using local labour and materials. Collectively our 40 years experience will be on hand to oversee the project but, the aim is have the hospital and clinic built by the local people for the local people.  This will go some way to assist in local employment and participation which in turn will help in the build up of the economy........

We also would like to expand on these specific projects and know of other areas that will need refurbishment or total rebuilds and are always looking for donations from companies/individuals that want to help, it can be in services, equipment (new/second-hand), funds, etc.  The growing stability of the country, year by year, Sierra Leone in general, is a very good investment opportunity for those people who would like to help a country in dire need of investment. The long term potential is very good for developments and National Health projects. For interested parties that would like to participate, please click contact or use our 'Quickmailer' on our project homepage...........

We are intending to offer with this project, a good standard of health care to the local populous and to bring in medical tourism, this will be in the form of Consultants, Doctors & students from emanate Universities and Hospitals in the USA and the UK to help with their own personal experience and assistance. Working with the very qualified personal within Blue Shield Service Ltd (Sierra Leone) and advice from the medical fraternity in Sierra Leone, we are looking forward to putting this project together in a way that will be of real benefit to the local population and be able to expand over the long term, being self sufficient, covering the areas of Primary, Secondary and later Tertiary care, also bringing a renal unit to the area and mobile unit to reach the more rural areas.  Thus, helping with the preventative care so in the long term, reducing the cost of care required later on in life for individuals.

Kenama lays south east of Freetown, near the Liberian border and was the first major town to be taken over by the rebels in the 11 year war and suffered extensive damage.  The last two years has seen it slowly get back on its feet........
